Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day) 2023: Why is Unity Day celebrated?
National Unity Day commemorates the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, India’s first Home Minister, celebrated for his pivotal role in persuading numerous princely states to unify with the newly formed Indian Union. He is renowned as the ‘Iron Man of India’ and stands as one of the founding leaders of the Indian Republic. In 1947, at the time of India’s independence, the nation consisted of 562 princely states, many of which held the responsibility for tax collection. In this challenging context, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, often referred to as the ‘Iron Man of India,’ successfully convinced these princely states to join the Indian Union.
